Well, we are getting into a pretty terrible routine of ear infections with Gabriel. At his 1 year check-up, in January, our doctor said she wasn't really worried about the number of ear infections he has had but if he got another one then we would need to do something about it. In March, we hit our 5th ear infection in 6 months and knew a referral to an ENT was coming soon.
What we didn't expect is that this ear infection would last 4 or 5 weeks. We got into the habit of ear infection, trip to the doctor, antibiotic for 10 days, 3 days after finishing antibiotic the ear infection is back. We did this 2 times before saying enough is enough! Sure enough, the ENT referral was made for 3 weeks out and when the antibiotic failed to work AGAIN, it was time to really get the ball rolling.
Gabe had to be taken to the doctor everyday for 3 days to receive antibiotic injections. On the 3rd day of shots, he still had an ear infection so we were given another prescription to start right away. Two days later, we're back in the doctor's office with a fever and you guessed it . . . an ear infection. The doctor wanted to give him another script to "hold him over" until the ENT appointment when I suggested we see the ENT sooner.
To summarize the ENT visit, the doctor wanted to put in tubes but told us that tubes don't solve the problem they just buy us time until Gabe can develop more and solve the issues himself. So, Daryl and I prayed about what to do and decided that if we can avoid surgery we would.
Gabe is now a patient at Upper Cervical Care, a wellness chiropractic clinic that I have been going to for almost a year. We are going to give this a shot since it has worked so well with me. Our pediatrician doesn't think there is any harm in trying it and it has the possibility of helping him with his asthma and allergies.
For now, Gabe is still finishing a round of antibiotics and once they're done we will see what happens. Gabe is blessed with a high tolerance for pain but that means we aren't always able to catch ear infections in the early stages.
